Cist burial

A Cist (Kist) is a container for the body or ashes in early burials. Cists are often graves lined with a range of materials that includes stone slabs, wood, brick or even clay tiles. The bottom of the Cist is usually left open to the original earth and the top generally covered with a stone slab. Sometimes a Cist is further covered over by a barrow or burial mound and surrounded by a ring of kerbstones. Burial in a Cist was a regular practice in prehistoric times, but they are most common in the later Bronze Age and Roman periods.
