Ceratosaurus was a carnivorous theropod that lived around 156 to 145 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. Ceratosaurus had a heavy body, long stiff tail and walked on two strong muscular hind legs. Its fore legs were very short with four fingers on each hand. It had three horns on its skull: two above the eyes and one on the end of its snout.

Ceratosaurus means "horn lizard" because of the three horns on its head. It was named by palaeontologist Othniel C. Marsh in 1884. Fossils have been found in North America and Africa.
